چکیده

Spitzer observations of the neutron star (ultra-compact) X-ray binary (XRB) 4U 0614+091 with the Infrared Array Camera reveal emission of non-thermal origin in the range 3.5-8 µm. The mid-infrared spectrum is well fit by a power law with spectral index of α = −0.57 ± 0.04 (where the flux density is F ν ∝ ν α). Given the ultra-compact nature of the binary system, we exclude the possibility that either the companion star or the accretion disc can be the origin of the observed emission. These observations represent the first spectral evidence for a compact jet in a low-luminosity neutron star XRB and furthermore of the presence, already observed in two black hole (BH) XRBs, of a 'break' in the synchrotron spectrum of such compact jets. We can derive a firm upper limit on the break frequency of the spectrum of ν thin = 3.7 × 10 13 Hz, which is lower than that observed in BH XRBs by at least a factor of 10. Assuming a high-energy cooling cutoff at ∼ 1 keV, we estimate a total (integrated up to X-rays) jet power to X-ray bolometric luminosity ratio of ∼ 5%, much lower than that inferred in BHs.

Evidence for a jet contribution to the optical/infrared light of neutron star X-ray binaries

Optical/near-infrared (optical/NIR; OIR) light from low-mass neutron star X-ray binaries (NSXBs) in outburst is traditionally thought to be thermal emission from the accretion disc. Here we present a comprehensive collection of quasi-simultaneous OIR and X-ray data from 19 low-magnetic field NSXBs, including new observations of three sources: 4U 0614+09, LMC X–2 and GX 349+2. The average radio–...

Polarimetric observations of the innermost regions of relativistic jets in X-ray binaries

Synchrotron emission from the relativistic jets launched close to black holes and neutron stars can be highly linearly polarized, depending on the configuration of the magnetic field. In X-ray binaries, optically thin synchrotron emission from the compact jets resides at infrared–optical wavelengths. The polarimetric signature of the jets is detected in the infrared and is highly variable in so...

BeppoSAX Observations of the Atoll X - Ray Binary 4 U 0614 + 091

We report the first simultaneous measurement of the broad band X-ray (0.3–150 keV) spectrum of the neutron star xray binary 4U 0614+091. Our data confirm the presence of a hard x-ray tail that can be modeled as thermal Comptonization of lowenergy photons on electrons having a very high temperature, greater than 220 keV, or as a non-thermal powerlaw. We detected a spectral feature that can be in...

UvA - DARE ( Digital Academic Repository ) Near - Infrared Synchrotron Emission from the Compact Jet of GX 339 - 4

We have compiled contemporaneous broadband observations of the black hole candidate X-ray binary GX 339 4 when in the low/hard X-ray state in 1981 and 1997. The data clearly reveal the presence of two spectral components, with thermal and nonthermal spectra, overlapping in the optical–near-infrared bands. The nonthermal component lies on an extrapolation of the radio spectrum of the source, and...
